Carrie and her partner, Mike Barker-who couldn't be here today-are receiving this award for their incredible work in United States v. DaJuan Key- a sex trafficking case. This defendant had multiple prior convictions for sex offenses and posted multiple women prolifically on backpage.com. As a result of Mike and Carrie's tireless dedication to the pursuit of justice for some of the most dangerous offenders in our community.
More broadly however, this single case was just one example of Carrie and Mike's tireless dedication to the pursuit of justice for some of the most dangerous offenders in our community.
One of the greatest honors in doing this job is working alongside the agents and officers who sacrifice their time, their personal lives, and their own safety, in order to make cases. Carrie and Mike have chosen these uniquely difficult cases to be their life's work and have worked quietly, tirelessly, for years, to protect the most important asset our community possesses, our children.
What sets these agents apart is that for them, this is more than just a job- it has become a calling. Both have devoted their careers to the service of the victims in these cases.
Young girls who have too often been forgotten by their families, their friends, by their communities, but thankfully not by Carrie and Mike. I watched as they worked all hours of the day and night, responding to local police departments to interview witnesses and victims, driving witnesses and victims to meetings, personal appointments, and to court hearings without being asked and helping victims navigate family related issues that arose during the pendency of the case. There was quite literally no task too inconvenient or too insignificant for these two agents.
Both Carrie and Mike have daughters and they treated these girls with the same kind of love and empathy with which they treat their won daughters.
Mike and Carrie have truly made these cases and these victims their lives so that no one else's daughters will have to suffer as these young girls have. This case gave me a front row seat from which to witness the work of two of the finest FBI agents the Bureau has in its service and we should all be grateful that agents like Carrie and Mike are out there protecting the children of our community.
These two really do deserve every award given to them. This kind of case load is heavy to carry. I see it on Mike some days. Such sad stories and days and days of graveling in the worst evil in this world. One day in an answer to a question we had about a possible transfer we both got an answer that to do good things it takes great sacrifice. This has been so true over the decade that Mike has worked this. I am so grateful that he can, because someone has to fight against this evil and protect the children of this world. He makes us all so proud and we are so lucky to have someone so brave and unselfish to be our husband and dad.
