R.I.P.

RIP "Destroyer". A tribute to our fallen hermit crab comrade.

Our hearts are heavy on this solemn afternoon as we remember our friend, and in many ways our brother... "Destroyer." You were given your name by a little boy who saw your true potential, the ability to love, inspire, and hopefully someday, destroy stuff. You stood out to us in countless ways, and served as an example of how to live life, fast, furious, and destructively. From the first day you came home with us and did the creepy little sideways walk, with your gross whiskers swaying in the kitchen's breeze and your beady little black crab eyes locked onto Noah suspiciously as you tried to escape, we knew you would never escape....our hearts.

Destroyer, we will never forget the day when Jamen showed us a picture online of how disgusting you look without your shell, like a misfit alien spider. That was the day you helped us to understand the important vital truth, that the old adage that "real beauty is on the inside" is a giant repugnant lie. Now we know that real beauty comes from the intricately painted man made shells we use to cover our inner ugliness. Truth was always most important to you.

Destroyer, we learned early on, from the first day you sat in your plastic box doing absolutely nothing (until midnight when you made creepy bumping noises all night long) until the last day you sat in your plastic box doing absolutely nothing, that you were truly special. We know that those three times each week that we didn't put you away properly and left you to roam free, you were trying to teach us important life lessons such as: When you escape, don't jump off the counter because people will hear you bouncing accross the floor, and when life gets bumpy, and swingy aroundy, just find the first chubby little hand near you, and pinch on for dear life. But your most recent, and sadly, your last lesson to us was most powerful still. We now understand that when you do escape, and you get into the disposal side of the kitchen sink of life, and your shell is bouncing up and down on the spinning blade of life's unforgiving twists and turns... DON'T COME OUT TO SEE WHAT'S GOING ON! We will forever be grateful for the lesson, but even more so, for your personal sacrifice just to teach us this deep principal. We will remember this lesson, and your giving heart each time we gaze into the plastic box which, so much like our hearts is now empty... a little stinky, and still covered in tiny artificially colored plastic rocks... and probably some dirt.

Because of you, Destroyer, we will each now carefully consider the shell behind which we will each hide to make sure the disposals in each of our lives will not, for indeed they cannot, "destroy" us leaving only a scuffed shell behind.

Rest in peace our friend Destroyer. May your rest be even more peaceful knowing that you inspired us all the way until yesterday when mom realized that the disposal didn't sound right. Your memory will live on now, each time we do the dishes, which in our house, as you know, is at least 12 times a day.

Destroyer survived by his owner and brother in arms, Noah, his acrobatics coach Rudy who would rather throw him than give him back to Noah, his after the fact body guard, Mom, who always taught the kids not to do... what they just did to you, Dad, who buys your stinky gross crab granules at the Walmart, and the 10 now empty but still sticky hands that held (and tormented you) each and every day.
